For our first article I thought I would take the time to write about something that has become relevant and personal to me as of late. Meditation has been popping up on my radar a lot recently and it couldn't come at a more perfect time because, as a high-functioning person, I know I can always use more of this in my life (read: any... I have not been practicing meditation at all lately). To be honest, everyone can benefit from some meditation in their lives, but communicating that to the uninitiated can be a bit of a challenge.

I think a lot of people picture meditation as the stereotypical new-wave hippy mantra-chanting, but meditation is a personal experience. Without overcomplicating the process, meditation is simply some quiet time spent with yourself. There are definitely more structured approaches to meditation and can include spiritual elements as well, but it all depends on what you want to get out of meditation.

Without getting too metaphysical, let's just look at spending quiet time with yourself as a bit of a brain reset. You have an incredible number of neurons in your brain - last scientific tally determined that we have 100 billion of them. Neurons are the building blocks of your nervous system, and your nervous system is what sends out chemical and electrical signals to your body to make it do things. Sometimes when your body can't do certain things it's because your brain and your body aren't communicating very well. Spending even a few minutes a day meditating can allow some of your neurons to take a little breather and reboot, which can have some amazing physical results such as less muscle tension, reduced inflammation, and pain management. 

But HOW do I meditate?

A perfect way to introduce some quiet time into your life is by going for a float! For those who have never heard of "floating" it is 60 minutes of uninterrupted bliss in an enclosed tub filled with warm water and an Epsom salt solution. Soaking in Epsom salt (Magnesium) has a massive amount of benefits in itself:

Each tub is filled with 500kg of Epsom salt, which creates a buoyant environment, allowing you to feel weightless. This feeling not only results in a physical decompression of the body, but the environment is very conducive to some quiet time for the brain. I find that floating is a great way for people to give meditation a try, because even if you feel like you didn't meditate very much, you are reaping all of the other benefits of floating, and the experience can be tailored to your comfort level. You can leave the lid open or have it shut; you can leave the lights on or off; and you can even get out during your float if you need a break. 

I decided to visit Float Well today for some much needed quiet time and what an incredible experience it was! The space is absolutely beautiful and just being in the environment is relaxing in itself. 

Float Well only opened two weeks ago, but you would never know it going into the space. Everything about Float Well feels so tranquil, and is a true haven right in the middle of the city. Samantha showed me to my room, and gave me a complete rundown of what to do and all of my options for my float. They even have two choices of earplugs! 

Getting your body to chill and relax starts with getting your mind to chill. As we become more comfortable with the concept of holistic health (and I mean holistic in the sense of taking care of our whole selves - body, mind, soul) we need to get more familiar with how to take care of our brains.

If floating may not be your thing just yet you can start with some simple meditations on your own. There are many apps available with guided meditations, one of the most popular being Headspace. If you think you are too busy to take 10 minutes a day for yourself then keep this Zen proverb in mind: 

"You should sit in meditation for twenty minutes every day - unless you're too busy. Then you should sit for an hour."
